Red Band

Mangawhai

2022

Red band is an exercise in architectural clarity, where every decision serves both aesthetic and ecological intent. Conceived on a disciplined 1.2m grid, the design minimises material wastage while maximising spatial efficiency - a nod to sustainability without compromise. Its shed-like simplicity is cleverly detailed, unified by a refined palette that echoes the beauty of Mangawhai’s landscape.

The earthy scoria red exterior is a chromatic reference to the wild red sorrel covering the site in late summer. Within, the interior unfolds with a palpable sense of tranquillity. Okume plywood, exposed concrete floors, and bespoke timber joinery create a serene atmosphere.

Upon entering this home, you are drawn down past a contemplative courtyard, the children’s bedrooms and into the heart of the main living space, where decks connect you to the landscape. At its culmination, the main bedroom includes the addition of an outdoor bathroom and sauna, spaces of quiet retreat.

Red Band is more than a home; it is a dialogue between site, structure, and soul, crafted for those who seek beauty in simplicity and a connection to the rhythms of nature.

Testimonial

“When I meet people in the Mangawhai community, they often tell me that they know our house. They love how it follows the contour of the hill, and the scoria colour feels very “of its place” - obviously referencing the many red farm buildings dotted around the countryside.

Visitors frequently comment on the calming effect of the wooden interior. It’s a relaxing home for entertaining in yet it is also the perfect retreat from the busyness of modern life”
